Prof. Hongtao Ding will present their latest research on a fast and efficient method for creating functional surface patterns on metal alloys using nanosecond laser-based high-throughput surface nanostructuring (nHSN). their nHSN method employs nanosecond laser pulses to treat large surface areas in just a few seconds, significantly reducing processing time from hundreds of minutes per square inch. In contrast to conventional understanding of surface silanization, they have discovered that the nHSN chemical treatment step induces not only silanization effects but also, more prominently, chemical etching of metal surfaces. By engineering random nanoscale structures on these surfaces, their method creates superhydrophobic surfaces with water repellent, anti-icing, self-cleaning, antiviral, and light-absorbing characteristics. Through careful selection of silane reagents and laser operation parameters, they have developed a powerful engineering method to tune surface wettability between superhydrophilicity and superhydrophobicity. their findings could lead to new and exciting opportunities for various surface engineering applications.
